Essential Oils and Children: Safety Guidelines
Marli De Sousa Wałęsa · July 17, 2026 · 4 min read
Quick answer: children require much lighter dilutions than adults, some oils (especially warming ones) are avoided altogether, and it's always best to start with the smallest possible amount. When in doubt, check with a pediatrician.
Why children need a different approach
Children's skin is thinner and more permeable than adult skin, and their metabolism is still developing. That's why rules that work for adults shouldn't automatically be applied to children — much heavier dilution and greater caution are essential.
Core safety guidelines
- Always dilute oils in a carrier oil — ratios for children should be much gentler than for adults.
- Avoid application near the face and airways in infants.
- Choose milder oils, like Lavender, instead of intense, warming ones (e.g. Oregano, Cinnamon).
- Always patch-test on a small area of skin before wider use.
A diffuser in a child's room
Short diffusing sessions (e.g. 30-60 minutes) with a small number of drops are generally a gentler option than skin application. Make sure the room is well ventilated and watch how your child responds to the scent.
When to consult a specialist
For infants, or children with asthma, allergies, or other conditions, it's always worth checking with a pediatrician before introducing essential oils into your home routine.
