Where an essential oil comes from

Plants produce essential oils as a natural defense and signaling mechanism — repelling pests, attracting pollinators, protecting against disease. To extract the oil, the relevant plant part is typically steam-distilled, or cold-pressed in the case of citrus oils. A large amount of raw plant material yields a relatively small amount of pure oil, which is why sourcing and plant quality matter so much.

Essential oil vs. fragrance oil

A fragrance oil is usually a synthetic blend created purely to smell good — it contains no natural active compounds from a plant. An essential oil is a 100% natural extract, and its chemical composition (and effects) depend on the plant species, growing region, and distillation method.

Why this distinction matters

The difference has real practical implications: a fragrance oil is mainly for scenting a room, while a genuine essential oil can be used aromatically, topically, and — for select dōTERRA oils — internally, according to the label.

What dōTERRA's CPTG certification means

CPTG (Certified Pure Tested Grade) is dōTERRA's internal quality standard. Every batch goes through a series of lab tests (including gas chromatography and mass spectrometry) checking for purity, contaminants, heavy metals, or fillers, and confirming the chemical profile matches what's expected for that plant species. That process is what allows a real claim of "tested purity," rather than just a producer's statement.
